The first shop was opened by Adam Mooney in Dublin 1990. It was family run. The business philosophy represented Adam's vision to embrace innovation and professionalism. New Tanning technology was sourced from around the world. This offered the consumer a far higher level of service than conventional UK tanning salons. In fact, The Tanning Shop introduced the first dedicated vertical tanning unit in Europe. This allowed The Tanning Shop to offer Higher levels of hygiene. A more professional tanning service. Faster, more convenient machines.

Adams strategy was to gain acceptance on the high street in a market that was previously perceived as 'unprofessional'.
Staff were trained to become expert tanning providers, and salons were located in town and city centres. Within 18 months of opening the first store, four others were opened. Since the demand for tanning has increased. The tanning Shop has grown with this demand to dominate the UK tanning sector and now dominates the market place. 'The Tanning Shop dominates the tanning sector, operating a chain of tanning outlets under 'The Tanning Shop' brand name.' Mintel Report Health & Beauty Treatments (March 2003) In 2002 The Tanning Shop introduced Spray Tan (UV free tanning) in to the UK.
