REGULATION OF SUNBEDS:
THE TANNING SHOP SETS THE INDUSTRY STANDARD

The Tanning Shop (100 salons in UK and Ireland) introduces minimum age of 18 and welcomes further industry regulation.

With immediate effect, The Tanning Shop has decided to introduce a minimum age requirement for all customers using their UV equipment.

The Tanning Shop would also welcome any regulation restricting the presence of unmanned tanning salons in the UK.

"Since 1990 we have been setting the highest standards of operation throughout our salons. We have always strived to ensure that our customers are fully informed about UV exposure. The health of each and every customer is paramount to us. These standards have been developed and maintained sometimes in the absence of any legal operating standards. It is the lack of these legal requirements that has allowed unmanned salons to develop"
Adam Mooney, Founder of The Tanning Shop.

All customers of The Tanning Shop are given a thorough consultation designed to determine their skin type and evaluate their tanning history so that appropriate exposure times can be determined. No persons with unsuitable skin (typically freckled white skin) are permitted to use our UV equipment.

The Tanning Shop also confirms that all it' s staff are fully trained in operating their UV equipment and guiding customers on moderate and sensible levels of tanning. Furthermore, we are currently rolling out retail software that carries a biometric reading of all it's customers, the purpose of which is to restrict any abuse or overuse of tanning machines. As all customers are registered centrally this allows The Tanning Shop to restrict customers using any other Tanning Shops within a 24 hour period.

The Tanning Shop is aware of the current EU directive concerning levels of irradiance (0,3) of sunbeds. Whilst, it has not been introduced into the UK as yet, we are currently changing our equipment in advance of any legislation so that we will be ready for any compliance directive that may be issued.

The Tanning Shop does not accept that UV exposure (indoor or outdoor) constitutes a health risk. In fact, we believe that moderate exposure can provide substantial health benefits that are being ignored by a narrow view of tanning/UV exposure and it's relation to the cause of skin cancer. We would endorse a health policy designed specifically for the UK and not a copy of a policy promoted in other countries, such as Australia, where the climate is unlike ours, yet a large number of it's inhabitants are to a large extent, of northern European descent.

The Tanning Shop supports the view of Oliver Gillie, independent researcher and health writer, director of Health Research Forum, in his report "Sunlight Robbery". This report advocates the moderate use of sunbeds as a viable supplement to natural light for the most effective production of Vitamin D.
